The Resident Evil 4 remake has a lot of weapons to choose from, across a number of different weapon classes. From handguns to rifles, shotguns to rocket launchers, there’s hundreds of possible combinations to try and fit within your attaché case.

Every single one of these weapons has its own stats, weapon perks, upgrades, and more, making each one of them useful in some way or another. We’ve put together this guide covering every weapon in the Resident Evil 4 remake, their stats, and where to get them.

Handgun locations, upgrades, stats - RE4 Remake

The SG-09 R is your trusty starting sidearm, with you from the very start of the game. It’s a fairly basic weapon, outclassed by most other weapons in one way or another but rarely in every aspect. Fully upgraded, it’s a capable little beast, but it’s probably not one you’ll be bringing to the end-game. Still, you never forget your first.

One of the earliest weapons available to trade for, costing you 5 Spinels at the merchant. The Punisher’s claim to fame is its penetrating power, which lets you shoot multiple enemies at once if you line them up juuuuust right. It’s got a little less power than the SG-09 R, but it makes up for it with an increased ammo capacity, a faster reload speed, and a slightly faster rate of fire, making the upgrade a worthwhile one in the early game.

Red9's location is a little bit out of the way if you want it as soon as possible, but it’s definitely worth going out of your way for. Sure, it’s got a low ammo capacity, reload speed, and rate of fire, but it’s got an incredible amount of power right out of the gate, and that only gets higher with upgrades. Its exclusive perk increases its power even further by 50%, ensuring it can take down even the toughest enemies in as few shots as possible.

The Blacktail is a straight upgrade from the starting weapon, the SG-09, in every aspect except ammo capacity. You can buy it from the merchant from Chapter 7 onwards, and it will almost certainly become your go-to when you do. The previously mentioned ammo capacity can be a big drawback, but if you throw a few coins into improving the capacity you should be fine for the most part.

Starting from Chapter 8, you can trade 10 Spinels for the Matilda at the merchant, and you’ll probably want to do that. With a further 12 Spinels for the Matilda’s stock, you can turn it into a handgun that fires three-round bursts — a sure way to burn through ammo, but a powerful option with tougher fights. Plus, if you’ve unlocked infinite ammo, you don’t even need to worry about running out.

SG-09 R

The SG-09 R is your trusty starting sidearm, with you from the very start of the game. It’s a fairly basic weapon, outclassed by most other weapons in one way or another but rarely in every aspect. Shotgun locations, upgrades, stats - RE4 Remake

The W-870 is the first shotgun in the game, but it is entirely missable at its earliest. You can grab it from the second floor of a house next to the tower in the village, or buy it from the merchant as soon as you bump into him. It’s a powerful close-range weapon, acting exactly as a shotgun should, but takes forever to reload, so you’ll want to make sure you make your shots count.

The Striker is a less accurate weapon with a much wider spread, but significantly more power than any other shotgun in the game. If you’re up close and personal with your enemies, a single shot should do some serious damage, and if you back up a bit you can usually hit two or three enemies at once. Its biggest strength is its ammo capacity, which fully upgraded lets you fire off 24 shots before reloading. You can pick it up from the merchant from Chapter 10.

W-870

The W-870 is the first shotgun in the game, but it is entirely missable at its earliest. You can grab it from the second floor of a house next to the tower in the village, or buy it from the merchant as soon as you bump into him. SMG locations, upgrades, stats - RE4 Remake

The TMP is the quintessential SMG: low power, high speed. It pumps out bullets at lightning fast speeds, letting you mow down hordes of enemies — if you don’t mind missing a few shots. Available from the merchant from Chapter 3, this weapon is all about spraying and praying, and having a bit of fun while you do it.

Starting in Chapter 13, you can pick up the LE-5. You should pick up the LE-5, here's the LE-5 SMG location. It’s more powerful than the TMP, has the same rate of fire, and a slightly lower ammo capacity, but it comes with penetrating power, just like the Punisher handgun. Use this when you need to take out densely packed groups of enemies, and it’ll cut through them like a hot knife through butter.

The Chicago Sweeper is not only a very good weapon, it also looks very cool. Unfortunately, in order to use it, you’ll need to play through the game at least twice, beating the game’s Professional difficulty in 7 hours or less. It’s worth it, though, to look like an old New York mobster.

TMP

The TMP is the quintessential SMG: low power, high speed. It pumps out bullets at lightning fast speeds, letting you mow down hordes of enemies — if you don’t mind missing a few shots. Available from the merchant from Chapter 3, this weapon is all about spraying and praying, and having a bit of fun while you do it.

Rifle locations, upgrades, stats - RE4 Remake

The only sniper rifle in the game, the SR M1903 is an invaluable tool for any would-be “zombie” hunter. You can pick it up from the Merchant in Chapter 2, and if you buy it during this chapter you’ll also get a free scope, saving you a little bit of money. It works exactly as you’d expect a sniper rifle would: aim from a distance, fire, and watch just about any enemy go down in a single shot.

The Stingray can be purchased from the merchant in Chapter 7, and has a host of perks going for it. It’s compatible with various scopes, making it useful in both the short range and the long range, and it provides extra power against weak points. Add in some penetrating power, and you’ve got a weapon that’s likely to stay in your inventory for most of the game.

Unlocking the CQBR Assault Rifle in Resident Evil 4 Remake is a fairly complicated process, but it’s well worth doing. It’s the only fully automatic rifle in the game, meaning it doles out serious damage in a very short timespan, but also eats through valuable ammo very quickly. It’s a last resort weapon, but it’s one worth keeping in your back pocket at all times.

SR M1903

The only sniper rifle in the game, the SR M1903 is an invaluable tool for any would-be “zombie” hunter. You can pick it up from the Merchant in Chapter 2, and if you buy it during this chapter you’ll also get a free scope, saving you a little bit of money. The Broken Butterfly is the earliest magnum in the game, available from the merchant in Chapter 7, and provides a powerful punch when you need it the most. It’s very precise, hits very hard, and doesn’t really have any major drawbacks.

Yet another weapon that is a straight upgrade from the earlier weapons in its class, the Killer7 is available from the merchant in Chapter 11. It has a handy laser sight built in to help you hit your targets, and is generally just a better version of the Broken Butterfly. Well worth picking up, and always good in a tough fight.

The Handcannon is only unlocked by clearing the game on Professional difficulty, but you don’t have to worry about rank, so take your time. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll find that you can upgrade it to have unlimited ammo, meaning you can wipe just about anything off the face of the planet with as many bullets as you please.

Broken Butterfly

The Broken Butterfly is the earliest magnum in the game, available from the merchant in Chapter 7, and provides a powerful punch when you need it the most. It’s very precise, hits very hard, and doesn’t really have any major drawbacks.

Special Weapons

The Bolt Thrower is possibly the most interesting and versatile weapon in the game, but it has a few drawbacks. It’s available early on, by purchasing it from the merchant in Chapter 2, and you’ll need to buy the recipe for bolts, too. Bolts are crafted from knives, which are somewhat of a rare resource, but you can collect bolts after you’ve fired them, so if you’re careful you shouldn’t need to worry too much. This weapon can also be upgraded with explosive bolts, which create proximity mines for enemies to blow themselves up with. Fun!

You know exactly what you’re getting here. It’s a rocket launcher. It launches rockets. Rockets kill things quickly. It’s available from the merchant from Chapter 5, and while it takes up a lot of space in your inventory, and can only really be used once, it’s still a rocket launcher, so it’s still worth having.

What’s better than a rocket launcher? Why, a rocket launcher with infinite ammo, of course. It’ll cost you 2,000,000 pesetas, only in a New Game+ file, but it’s got infinite ammo, and it’s a rocket launcher. It also has basically no recoil, and can instantly kill pretty much every enemy in the game. It might be expensive, but can you really put a price on infinite rockets?

Bolt Thrower

The Bolt Thrower is possibly the most interesting and versatile weapon in the game, but it has a few drawbacks. It’s available early on, by purchasing it from the merchant in Chapter 2, and you’ll need to buy the recipe for bolts, too. Bolts are crafted from knives, which are somewhat of a rare resource, but you can collect bolts after you’ve fired them, so if you’re careful you shouldn’t need to worry too much. This weapon can also be upgraded with explosive bolts, which create proximity mines for enemies to blow themselves up with. Fun!
